After two years at ASU, I went on a "junior
year abroad" to Germany in 1986, and I haven't been back much. Thereafter, it
was a series of mainly one-year stints in France, Oakland, Tokyo, Monterey CA
(finally finished a BA in 1992), Budapest, South Carolina, Vienna, South
Carolina again (got an International MBA), and then back to Hungary, where I've
been since 1995.
I have been the Budapest bureau chief of Russia's Interfax News Agency for five
years, doing business and financial news. My professional highlight so far was
an interview with the central bank governor that caused the local currency to
weaken so badly that the central bank had to raise interest rates by 300 basis
points the next day. So I destroyed an entire economy nearly single-handedly --
OK, the governor helped too.
>From July, I'll be living an old dream -- I'm leaving my job to write the
Country Report on Hungary for the Economist Intelligence Unit. I'll also have a
lot more free time to figure out what I want to be when I grow up.
I've been engaged to a fine lady named Sandra for about five or six years --
we've lost count. All we know is we got engaged on Cinco de Mayo. We might just
head up to Vegas after the reunion this October and bring an end to our sinful
cohabitation. She might make an honest man out of me.
I'm looking forward to the reunion! I hope to be in the US in October to take
the State Department's foreign service exam for the third time. I haven't passed
yet, but I came as close as mathematically possible last year.
